EUCARIS is based on a ‘pluggable framework architecture’. This means that the functionality of EUCARIS can be easily extended or adapted by so called “System Updates”. System Updates are downloaded and installed using the latest version of the Configuration Tool (click here for more information). The procedure to download and install System Updates is described in the revised “EUCARIS – Installation and Operation Manual.pdf” document, available on this site. The software components are received via the secure sTESTA channel and all software is checked for viruses and signed by EUCARIS Operations. The Configuration Tool checks the integrity of the received software components to ensure a safe distribution of these components onto secure environments.
A published System Update can make a number of common and specific changes to EUCARIS, and is system wide. There are two types of System Updates to distinguish:
– Core Update
– Extension
Core Update
A Core Update consist of one or more patches that solves one or more problems and/or one or more improvements or functional additions to the core components. These updates are marked as ‘mandatory’ and should have been executed before any available Extension can be installed. A Core Update is cumulative (the last Update consists all changes in previous Updates) and updates all EUCARIS core components.
Extension
An Extension consist of a web client- and/or service plugin which adds or updates new functionality to/in the EUCARIS framework. Extensions are optional, but require an updated system (all available mandatory Updates must have been installed). Extension updates also cumulative (the last Update consists all changes in previous Updates) and adds or updates all relevant extension’s components.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will existing functionality continue to operate when we install a new System Update?
A: All System Updates are backwards compatible, unless explicitly noted otherwise. New System Updates will not negatively affect current operations.
Q: Will all future functionality also be distributed via System Updates?
A: Yes. As long as there are no major changes in the core functionality of EUCARIS any change or addition will be distributed via System Updates.
Q: I want to install a completely new instance of EUCARIS. Can I get a most recent version?
A: The most recent version of the installation package is release 7. Request this package at EUCARIS Operations.
Q: If I install a new version of EUCARIS release 7, do i have to install all available System Updates to get an up-to-date system?
A: Yes. The most recent and available System updates are automatically selected for your system specific. It is advised to install all available updates.
Q: We need to install the database scripts via a DBA. How do we know which scripts to execute?
A: Once an update is downloaded, click the ‘information’ button. The software now determines which scripts need to be executed, and enlist them including file and path name in the description.
Q: In case of manual database script execution: Can the database scripts be executed prior to the rest of the update?
A: Yes (unless explicitly described in the description of the update). Database scripts are backwards compatible, cummulative and do not break any current functionality.
Q: Why do we need to verify the update when performing the update completely manually?
A: The ‘verify’ option checks if the system is in an expected state prior to this update. This ensures that the update was completed succesfully. Extentions or other depending updates can and should only be installed if the current state of this update is verified.
Q: My test/development server does not have a connection to sTESTA. How can I install any available System Update?
A: Currently the automated distribution of System Updates requires sTESTA, but for test and development systems it is possible to install a prepared System Update manually. Please contact EUCARIS Operations for more information.
