Main characteristics of the Danish vehicle register:

  • Vehicles are registered in the name of the owner of the vehicle and the license plates are issued to the vehicle. If the ownership changes the vehicle will keep its registration number (and plates) unless the new owner wishes to use a ‘wish plate’ (personalized plates).
If the vehicle is put down for a period of time and the plates therefore returned to the authorities, the vehicle will however obtain a new license number and new plates in case of a re-registration.
  • The information system of the Ministry of the Interior store information on both the holder and the owner of a vehicle. Historic data is reliable at least 25 years back. The historical information concerns vehicle and holder/owner
  • Denmark has information stored on all vehicles with formal registrations: Cars, trailers (all the types that can be used legally on the road), agricultural vehicles, mopeds, motorcycles, trikes, trucks, lorries. In Denmark military vehicles are not registered.
  • Denmark has the following typed of license plates:
    • Normal
    • Commercial
    • Commercial with paid VAT
    • Diplomatic
    • ‘Permanent temporary’ – plates that are registered to a car dealer or garage. The plates can be mounted on an unregistered vehicle so the customers can do test drives for a shorter period of time. These are not registered to a specific vehicle. The plates may not be used outside Danish borders.
    • ‘Temporary temporary’ – printed stickers that can be obtained from the Tax authorities in order to drive unregistered cars for just a few days and only in order to get them ready for registration. These plates must also not be used outside Danish borders.
